Culture and excursion destinations

Museums, exhibitions and memorials

Visitors are inspired by the many different excursion destinations found in the region of Semmering-Waldheimat-Veitsch; the area offers a varied programme of culture, sports and relaxation for the perfect holiday. In addition to the many indoor and outdoor activities, you can also immerse yourself in the history of easternmost Styria and its most famous residents. Outstanding museums, exhibition ‘worlds’ and memorial sites in the midst of a pristine natural landscape will make your holiday one to remember.

Great writers and artists such as Peter Rosegger or Johannes Brahms are prominent individuals associated with our region. By visiting the memorials dedicated to Rosegger and the Rosegger Museum in Krieglach or the Waldschule and the house where he was born on the Alpl, you can follow in the footsteps of the great local poet. At the Brahms Museum in Mürzzuschlag, you can experience the works and life of the important composer Johannes Brahms. The WinterSportMuseum and the SÜDBAHN Museum also feature unique exhibits and are definitely worth a visit! Children’s trails provide interesting information about winter sports and railways in an understandable way and invite younger visitors to get involved and try things out. The Kunsthaus Muerz is dedicated to the fields of contemporary music, literature, visual arts and architecture, as well as multimedia concepts and disciplines. The former Franciscan church is a part of the building complex and is listed under historic preservation. The concept of pilgrimage is very important in this region because the Styrian part of the Mariazellerweg – one of the most important pilgrimage routes in Austria – passes through it. Many noteworthy sites have been built to introduce interested visitors to the concept of pilgrimage: These include the largest accessible (i.e. hollow and able to be entered) pilgrim cross in the world (located in St. Barbara im Mürztal / Veitsch) and the WEGart objects found in the Pilgrims’ Park (in St. Barbara im Mürztal / Mitterdorf). Find out for yourself by visiting!
