Summer in Styria

The Semmering-Waldheimat-Veitsch region offers countless options

In summer, the Semmering-Waldheimat-Veitsch region is guaranteed to offer the perfect thing for every taste. Countless biking and hiking possibilities are available for families, connoisseurs and alpine mountaineering fans.
Here, you can get active by doing sports or simply enjoy the wonderful peace and quiet in the countryside. The largest forest area in the Alps offers countless hiking trails, whether for leisurely walks and hikes or more challenging tours, both on foot and by mountain bike. Thanks to the excellently marked and signposted mountain bike tours, you can explore the diverse alpine setting or simply enjoy cycling along the R5 (Mürz Valley Cycle Path). The region is also a member of the E-Bike Region of the Mürz Valley, which means there is a continuous network of e-bike charging stations. With a cycle path and mountain bike network that stretches from the Mürzer Oberland Nature Park across the Semmering-Waldheimat-Veitsch region to the orchard region in Kindberg, there is the perfect environment for every cycling enthusiast. Discover the various hiking and themed trails across the region. The tours around Brunnalm-Hohe Veitsch offer pure alpine atmosphere. Immerse yourself in the Middle Ages by visiting the castle ruins at Hohenwang in Langenwang or those at Lichtenegg in St. Barbara im Mürztal / Wartberg.

Great writers and artists such as Peter Rosegger or Johannes Brahms are prominent individuals associated with our region. There are several memorials and museums dedicated to them, where you can experience the works and arts of their time. Hike in the forest home of Peter Rosegger in the footsteps of the great local poet or visit the Peter Rosegger Museum, the house where he was born and the Waldschule (historic open-air school).

During your summer holiday, you should also visit the Ausstellungswelten (‘Worlds of Exhibitions’) in Mürzzuschlag. The SÜDBAHN Museum is home to an exciting exhibition on the Vienna–Trieste Southern Railway and the largest collection of handcars and motorcars in Austria. Thanks to the observation tower, opened in 2019, progress on the Semmering Base Tunnel can now be observed from a height of 15 metres. The WinterSportMuseum is one of the largest specialist museums for winter and ski sports, while the Kunsthaus is dedicated to contemporary art. The cultural programme is rounded off by the Brahms Museum, dedicated to the life and works of the composer.

The Kletterwald Stuhleck (forest high-ropes course) and the Sport- und Funpark Mürztal in St. Barbara im Mürztal / Mitterdorf provide even more thrills. Not only does the Stuhleck forest high-ropes course offer family-friendly fun and activities in direct contact with nature, it also lets more ambitious sportspeople get their money’s worth thanks to extraordinary courses up to 14 metres in the air. The sports and fun park also provides a great deal of enjoyment and adventure outdoors. At Austria’s first free-standing climbing garden, 36 climbing stations, a giant swing and a 170-metre-long ‘Flying Fox’ await. Each guest can choose their own level of difficulty, meaning even inexperienced people can get a taste of mountain air.

Recharge your batteries while playing golf, fishing or horseback riding – experience nature in Styria and let your soul unwind on your summer holiday! On particularly hot summer days, the Krieglach Water and Nature Adventure Park and Adventure Pool of St. Barbara im Mürztal / Mitterdorf invite you to relax and cool down. There is also a wide range of indoor activities on offer: discover, for example, the JUFA Veitsch Adventure World or the VIVAX Water World in Mürzzuschlag.
