The International Brahms Festival in Mürzzuschlag – Styria
This beloved musical event in honour of Johannes Brahms will take place from 9–13 September 2020 in Mürzzuschlag!
Every two years in September, the International Brahms Festival – a highlight of the classical music calendar – takes place in Mürzzuschlag. The festival gathers top international ensembles and soloists for a display of musical virtuosity in the ‘Brahms town’ of Mürzzuschlag in Semmering. In fact, Johannes Brahms spent two expansive, creative summers here in 1884 and 1885 and composed his Symphony No. 4 in E minor, Op. 98, as well as over 30 vocal works.
Since 1991, the Brahms Museum has been housed in the house of Johannes Brahms, which was extended by the original Brahms apartment. The Brahms Museum, the only one of its kind in Austria, attracts music lovers from all over the world and has already been awarded numerous museum prizes. Above all, in addition to the top-class programme, the audience particularly appreciates the familiar, personal atmosphere of this festival in Mürzzuschlag, the small town on the Semmering Railway UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Brahms Festival in Mürzzuschlag can also be perfectly combined with excursions to Vienna or Graz, because Mürzzuschlag is located precisely between these two cities with a travel time of about 60 minutes each way to Vienna and Graz.
The artistic direction of this music festival spotlights unique Brahms programming which can only be experienced in the region of Semmering-Waldheimat-Veitsch. The programme includes chamber music, songs, lectures and discussions at the highest level, spread out over five days. Concerts and lectures take place at both the Brahms Museum Mürzzuschlag and Kunsthaus Muerz. The festival’s themes vary every year, giving lovers of classical music plenty of chances to discover many unique pieces.
The international Brahms festival ‘JUBILÄEN’ 2021
In 2021, outstanding artists will again enchant audiences with their wonderful works and compositions, inviting them on an exciting voyage of discovery. The festival will not only honour the works of the great Johannes Brahms and Ludwig van Beethoven, who would have celebrated his 250th birthday in 2020, but also highlight other composers who are often wrongly neglected. These include Brahms’ rival Max Bruch (100th anniversary of his death), his admirer Ernst von Dohnányi (60th anniversary of his death) or his protégé Gustav Jenner (100th anniversary of his death), all of whom have great works worth discovering.
The dates of the 2021 International Brahms Festival are Wednesday, 8 September 2021 and Sunday, 12 September 2021
