Christmas magic at Pichl Castle

Arts and crafts and culinary delights

At Pichl Castle in St. Barbara im Mürztal, in the district of Mitterdorf, there is traditionally a ‘Christmas magic’ event with arts and crafts and culinary delights on the first weekend of Advent. Held in the uniquely charming atmosphere of the arcade courtyard and in the halls of the castle, visitors are presented with a sales exhibition featuring Christmas handicrafts and local specialities. Every year, over 40 exhibitors offer their works and products. After the festive opening and official welcome, visitors are invited to wander through the Christmas-themed event. Chestnuts, mulled wine, children’s punch and other delicacies await the guests. Regional music groups and wind ensembles usually provide the entertainment. Visitors will find themselves wowed by the culinary specialities on offer; for children, there is an enchanting supporting programme.

Attendees of all ages are invited to bake Christmas biscuits together in the ‘Knusperhäuschen’ area. The highlight of the event is a visit from Santa Claus, followed by ceremonial tower music with brass instruments. You should also take the chance to watch an expert nativity crèche maker at work and choose one or two decorative ceramic pieces for your own Christmas celebration. The event also features the surprising sight of alpacas grazing on hay in front of the castle.

Interesting facts about Pichl Castle

Pichl Castle, in the municipality of St. Barbara (Mitterdorf district), was built in the 16th century by Georg Idungspeuger on the site of an older courtyard built in 1363, and is still unchanged to this day. The castle features a characteristic U-shaped building block, which has four projecting corner towers with tented roofs. The star-ribbed vaulted chapel was formerly housed in the north-east tower, and on the ground floor there is a panelled hall with a coffered ceiling.
Tip: Every year in June, the Magical Art and Gardens event on the grounds of Pichl Castle enchants visitors.
