The Semmering-Waldheimat-Veitsch region
Lots of holiday options in the Mürz Valley
The region of Semmering-Waldheimat-Veitsch is a paradise for hiking and skiing and comprises the communities of St. Barbara im Mürztal, Krieglach, Langenwang, Mürzzuschlag and Spital am Semmering. The easternmost region of Upper Styria offers a huge variety of holiday options for hiking, skiing, relaxing and much more – there’s something here for everyone from athletes and cultural tourists to families.
In Krieglach and on the Alpl, you’ll gain deeper insight into the life of Styrian poet Peter Rosegger. In Langenwang, the Hohenwang castle ruins are located on a rocky mountain above the village. At the Winter!Sport!Museum!, Mürzzuschlag tells its story as the birthplace of winter sports; the SÜDBAHN Museum informs visitors about the history of the Semmering Railway UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Brahms Museum is dedicated to Johannes Brahms, who composed several works here whilst on summer holiday.
In St. Barbara im Mürztal, the districts of Mitterdorf and Veitsch have installed sculptures by local artists along the ‘Art and Pilgrimage’ trail. Veitsch demands plenty of attention for the world’s highest pilgrim cross made of wood, a massive structure that can be entered like a building. And in winter, the family-friendly ski area of Brunnalm-Hohe Veitsch wows visitors with its sixteen well-maintained slopes. The castle ruins of Lichtenegg, with their wonderful view, are located in the district of Wartberg.
Spital am Semmering’s high-ropes course in the forest and the Mitterdorf Climbing Academy, the largest indoor climbing gym in Austria, offer sporting challenges.
The eastern Mürz Valley is a well-kept secret amongst hikers: Green hills and forests in the Alpl, Pretul, Ganzalm and Stuhleck areas offer a contrast to the mountain paradise of Brunnalm-Hohe Veitsch. In the ski areas in Brunnalm-Hohe Veitsch and Stuhleck, winter sports enthusiasts will be overjoyed to discover slopes covered in deep snow. If you are looking for alternatives, go on romantic snowshoe tours, relax on a horse-drawn sleigh ride, whiz down a sledge run or enjoy the winter sun on a snowy walk.
How to get here: Travelling in this holiday region
No matter whether your visit is a winter holiday, summer getaway or day trip. In order to help you begin your stay in the holiday region of Semmering-Waldheimat-Veitsch in a relaxed manner, we’re very happy to advise you in choosing the best means of transport for your plans. The Semmering-Waldheimat-Veitsch region, at the foot of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Semmering Railway, is located in the eastern part of Upper Styria and borders the province of Lower Austria to the east. Only about an hour’s drive from Vienna and Graz, the region is the perfect starting point for a varied holiday.
Arrival by train
The trains of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) are a guaranteed way to get to your well-deserved holiday while avoiding traffic jams and the stress of driving. Thanks to our location on the Southern Railway line, you can comfortably travel to all our excursion destinations by train whilst doing something good for the environment as well. The ÖBB Railjet, the most modern Austrian high-speed train, arrives at Mürzzuschlag Station every hour from Graz and Vienna. In addition, there are S-Bahn lines within the region which provide regular train connections. Each municipality has a railway station, which makes it easy to get on and off the train wherever you need to. Tickets and timetable information are available online at oebb.at!
Tip: Do you want to travel with your bike? No problem – a ticket for your bike costs around two euros for the regional and S-bahn trains. Take a look at the ‘Einfach-Raus-Radticket (‘Just-Get-Started Cycle Ticket’)’.
Arrival by car
Would you like to get to know the holiday region flexibly, independently and unconstrained by public transportation? Then we recommend coming by car. The Semmering-Waldheimat-Veitsch region is located directly on the Semmering S6 expressway and offers you the possibility of getting on and off the motorway in every municipality. You can reach us from Vienna and Graz in just under an hour.
- Coming from the direction of Hungary / Bratislava / Vienna: From Vienna, via the Süd motorway (A2) and the Semmering expressway (S6).
- Coming from the direction of Slovenia / Graz: From the Phyrn motorway from Graz (A9) via the Brucker expressway (S35) and the Semmering expressway (S6).
- Coming from the direction of Germany / Salzburg / Linz: From Germany via the West motorway (A1) or the Phyrn motorway (A9) and the Semmering expressway (S6).

The Brahms Museum, Kunsthaus Muerz, SÜDBAHN Museum and WinterSportMuseum offer cultural delights that will provide an unforgettable experience for 21st-century visitors, too. Names such as Johannes Brahms, Peter Rosegger, Carl Ritter von Ghega, Toni Schruf and Max Kleinoschegg are inseparably connected with Mürzzuschlag and Styria. At the Brahms Museum, you can immerse yourself in the works and life of the important composer Johannes Brahms. The Kunsthaus Muerz displays contemporary art in the fields of music, literature, visual arts, architecture and multimedia disciplines. The Kunsthaus Muerz primarily focuses on contemporary art in the fields of music, literature, visual arts and architecture. At the SÜDBAHN Museum, you can follow the historical tracks of the Semmering Railway. Under the leadership of Carl Ritter von Ghega, this first high-mountain railway was built between 1848 and 1854. In 1998, it was the first railway line in the world to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You’re sure to have a sporty day at the WinterSportMuseum, where you can admire one of the world’s most important and largest collections in the field of skiing and winter sports! Tip: The museums’ children’s trails, with characters ‘Toni the Snow Hare’ and ‘Loko-Lieschen’, provide interesting information about winter sports and railways in an understandable way and invite younger visitors to get involved and try things out.
Three museums and the Kunsthaus
Only a few minutes’ walk away from each other, visitors have access to three museums as well as one event centre and art space. Take some time to let us tell you more about the ‘Mürzzuschlager’ Symphony during a guided tour through the Brahms Museum. Admire the Kunsthaus Muerz event centre, which was originally a church and has since been modernised. Take a break with some coffee and cake in the k.u.k. ‘café carriage’ at the SÜDBAHN Museum, or be surprised at the WinterSportMuseum when you learn how and why the first international skiing race in Central Europe was held right here in Mürzzuschlag.
Peter Rosegger - local poet
Peter Rosegger – follow in the footsteps of this local poet
Waldheimat: Birthplace, Waldschule (historic forest school) and country house
Immerse yourself in the wonderful ‘Waldheimat’ (‘forest home’) of Peter Rosegger and follow in his footsteps. In the region of Semmering-Waldheimat-Veitsch in Styria, you have the opportunity to rediscover the history of yesteryear and follow in the footsteps of this renowned local poet. Peter Rosegger was already revered even during his lifetime and is one of the best-known Styrian natives; his home and upbringing were important to him all his life. Peter Rosegger was born on 31 July 1843 at Kluppeneggerhof am Alpl, which is now a museum. He was the eldest of seven children. Today, the term ‘Waldheimat’ and the life of Peter Rosegger are almost inseparably intertwined and are known even beyond Austria. But how did all this actually come about? In 1877, Rosegger published his book Waldheimat, the first major collection of his childhood and youth memories of the Alpl. The work was a great success; one side effect of its publication was to make his immediate home famous throughout the German-speaking world, and the term ‘Waldheimat’ was subsequently also marked on maps. The poetic name of the area thus soon became a generally recognised regional designation. Until the end of his life, Peter Rosegger was connected with the ‘Waldheimat’ because it was much more than just a physical landscape. Rosegger once wrote: ‘The old forest house on the mountain fills more space in my head than the rest of the world. But this also includes the entire mountain, with all it entails. I assure you, it was a world in itself, and not one of the worst.’
To this day, Rosegger is appreciated by many people as a storyteller sharing his regional history and an observer of its simple rural lifestyle. His life and literary works cannot be separated from the historical developments that influenced them, from the middle of the 19th century until the First World War. The political zeitgeist was reflected in his works and in his life, especially since he was not only a writer and poet but also a critical journalist. Many hiking trails are used as pilgrimage paths and provide the opportunity to go on a multifaceted journey of discovery. Pilgrimages can provide not only clarity and a sense of orientation, new perspectives and vitality, but also spiritual rejuvenation and divine experiences. In addition to the traditional form of pilgrimage on foot, pilgrimage by bicycle has also become increasingly popular in recent years. The oldest form of pilgrimage is simply walking – the best way to perceive your surroundings and learn about yourself. Some pilgrimage trails lead over alpine passes and crossings and feature stunning views of infinite horizons. When going on a cycling pilgrimage, either with a traditional bicycle or an electric one, you can find your own route without much effort (sometimes), discover the churches and chapels along the way and stop for a break whenever you want.
The Styrian Mariazellerweg winds through the Semmering-Waldheimat-Veitsch region. For pilgrims and interested visitors, however, the pilgrimage trail also offers a number of relevant sights worth seeing along the way. One of these is the largest pilgrim cross in the world that is hollow and can be entered; don’t forget the WEGArt objects, too. Set off on your journey – there are so many pilgrimage sites to discover.
By the way, there are in fact two variants of the Mariazellerweg that pass through our region, the most eastern part of Upper Styria. Mariazellerweg Trail 706 A leads through the municipal area of St. Barbara im Mürztal (districts: Mitterdorf and Veitsch). The alternative route, 706 B, goes over the Alpl, then through St. Barbara im Mürztal (district: Veitsch) and finally to Mariazell.

Fun-filled swimming plus a place to relax and unwind – dive in and enjoy: Discover worlds of water in the region of Semmering-Waldheimat-Veitsch. Experience the water and nature adventure world in Krieglach – this popular recreational lake complex is nestled in the picturesque backdrop of the Mürztal mountains. It offers sports enthusiasts the perfect conditions for athletic training in and around the water. The idyllic landscape around the lake also offers plenty of space to relax and unwind. A separate bathing area for small children and a pedal boat rental service make this lake a popular destination for families, too. A warm summer day is best spent in the cool water: The outdoor adventure pool in St. Barbara im Mürztal / Mitterdorf features not only a large swimming and sports pool but also a 14-metre-long and very wide slide. A large sunbathing area ensures that you can spend a nice day at the beach undisturbed. Even on colder days, you and your family do not have to forgo the fun of swimming. Careen down the water slide at the indoor VIVAX recreational centre in Mürzzuschlag or use the sauna and fitness room. Splash around in the Veitsch Adventure Swimming Pool, the first official indoor swimming pool in Styria. In addition to a water slide, the sports facilities have been expanded with an indoor climbing facility, and a spacious sauna area with bio-, infrared and Finnish saunas as well as a steam bath and solarium are also part of the facilities. You can also enjoy a sauna and relax at some of our accommodation facilities, such as the ****Hotel Restaurant Krainer or Gasthof Gesslbauer. These are just a few possibilities when it comes to the world of water and swimming in the region of Semmering-Waldheimat-Veitsch.
Tip: Bodies of water are also easy to find at many excursion destinations and activities in the region. Visit the pristine natural floodplain areas in Mürzzuschlag and Langenwang or cycle along the Mürztal Cycle Path R5, where the Mürz River is a constant companion.
